  • Gleb Bogush commented on Russia's alleged pulling out of the International Criminal Court

    TLA counsel Gleb Bogush commented on Russia's statement concerning pulling out of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court which it signed back in 2000. From a legal standpoint Russia was never a party to the Rome Statute and withdrawing its signature does not affect existing obligations of Russia under treaty and customary international law.

  • TLA together with European Society of International Law launch International Law Lectures in Russia

    The European Society of International Law are proud to introduce a new joint project with leading Russian universities - International Law Lectures. The program and current composition of speakers can be assessed here

    The project will take place in cooperation with leading Russian law schools. The Higher School of Economics (Moscow) has sponsored and co-organized the pilot lecture of the series of legendary Martti Koskenniemi, and will continue to be in close cooperation and co-sponsorship of the program throughout the whole project. 

    Martti Koskenniemi, Anne Orford, Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, Philippe Sands, Anthea Roberts, Marko Milanovic, Gabor Rona, Matteo Vaccaro-Incisa and other top international law scholars and practitioners are among the first participants of the International Law Lectures in Russia in 2016/17 and 2017/18 academic years.

    The lectures are public but require prior registration in order to enter a university. Please see details on the individual lecture pages here

    Subject to lecturers' permission, all lectures will be filmed and posted online.

    The project is implemented in cooperation with leading Russian law schools. The first lectures of the series will be hosted and co-sponsored by the Higher School of Economics.

    This is the first ever initiative of this kind and at such a scale in Russia. The organisers are constantly working on the composition of the programme.   • Evgeny Borisenko and Natalia Yakimova join Threefold Legal Advisors as partners

    Evgeny Borisenko and Natalia Yakimova became partners of the law firm Threefold Legal Advisors LLC. They will now oversee the firm’s practice related to the European Court of Human Rights.

    Prior to joining Threefold Legal Advisors Evgeny Borisenko worked as a lawyer at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights where he managed large cross-country case projects and drafted leading judgments on the right to a fair trial and the right to freedom of expression. Before that, he headed consumer rights’ department of a large Russian federal agency, he also worked as a legal counsel in a leading international testing and inspection group and as a monitoring officer in the Office of the Ombudsman.

    Evgeny Borisenko graduated from the Moscow State Linguistic University (Russia) specialising in International Law, and continued his education at the Paris Institute of Political Sciences (France), Strasbourg University (France), European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (Italy). Evgeny speaks English, French and Spanish.

    Prior to joining Threefold Legal Advisors LLC Natalia Yakimova worked as a lawyer at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights, where she specialised on various aspects of civil and criminal law pertinent to the European Convention on Human Rights. Natalia’s professional experience also includes working as an associate for a leading international law firm, where she advised on various issues of corporate law and setting business in Russia, participated in conducting due diligence of legal documentation, carried out risk assessments and prepared transaction documents.

    Natalia Yakimova graduated from the Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoyevskiy (Russia) and obtained an LLM in European and International Law from the Free University of Brussels (Belgium). Natalia speaks English and French.

  • Gleb Bogush spoke at the Royal Netherlands Embassy

    On 1 June 2016 TLA counsel Gleb Bogush took part in an expert meeting organized by the Royal Netherlands Embassy, Human Rights Watch and Russian Justice Initiative. The event hosted by the Embassy was attended by a number of diplomatic workers, representatives of international human rights NGOs and advocates.

    During the meeting its participants discussed recent changes in Russian law and its application following some of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, as well as the problem of implementing the ECtHR’s judgments.

    Gleb Bogush addressed the decision of the Russian Constitutional Court from 19 April 2016 on the implementation of the ECtHR’s decision in Anchugov and Gladkov v. Russia.

     
  • Maria Issaeva will speak on the international conference on Human Rights Education and Research in the Promotion of the Council of Europe Standards in Moscow

    On 24-25 May 2016 Higher School of Economics in cooperation with the Council on the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights at the President of the Russian Federation and Council of Europe organizes an international scientific conference “Human Rights Education and Research in the Promotion of the Council of Europe Standards” at the HSE Moscow.

    The conference is held as one of the events in the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the Russia’s joining to the Council of Europe. Among others the conference will be attended by the representatives of the Council of Europe, Russian state officials, professors from the Russian and foreign universities and ombudsmen from Moldova, the Netherlands and Russia.

    TLA managing partner Maria Issaeva will speak on Soviet legacy in teaching public international law and human rights law as an obstacle in forming a positive image of human rights in Russia in a session concerning Educational programs on human rights law in the universities and for practicing lawyers.
